Vintage 1966 Gibson ES-335-12-String– Sunburst

A rare and highly collectible vintage Gibson, this 1966 ES-335-12 represents the first full production year of Gibson’s iconic semi-hollow 12-string. Introduced in 1965 to answer the growing demand for electric 12-strings during the folk-rock boom, the ES-335-12 offered the familiar feel and tone of the legendary ES-335 with shimmering 12-string chime. Only approximately 152 examples were shipped in 1966, making these significantly harder to find than their 6-string counterparts.

This guitar is in very good condition, especially considering its age. It remains 100% original and shows only light cosmetic wear, including minor finish checking on the top, a few small dings and chips, and light surface wear consistent with careful ownership. Light warping on the pickguard. The original Sunburst finish retains excellent color with very little fading, allowing the beautiful maple grain to show through. Included is the original yellow-lined Gibson hardshell case, which is also exceptionally well preserved.

The slim 1960s mahogany neck offers outstanding playability, while the original frets have been professionally leveled and exhibit only light wear in the lower positions. All original chrome hardware is intact with only light scuffing from normal use, and the electronics function exactly as they should.

Features include:

  • Laminated maple semi-hollow body with solid maple center block

  • Mahogany neck

  • Bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid block inlays

  • Dual original Gibson humbuckers

  • Original chrome hardware with early metal-capped knobs

  • Original 12-string tailpiece

The ES-335-12 found its way into the hands of several influential artists of the era, including Robbie Krieger of The Doors and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield, helping define the shimmering electric 12-string sound of the mid-1960s.

Whether you’re a collector, vintage enthusiast, or player looking for an inspiring and increasingly hard-to-find Gibson, this 1966 ES-335-12 is a wonderful example of one of the company’s rarest production models from the golden era of Kalamazoo.
