The Story Behind “Rocky”
The story of “Rocky” begins in 1965, when George Harrison sent his roadie, Mal Evans, to purchase a pair of Stratocasters. Evans returned with two Sonic Blue examples. One became Harrison’s first Stratocaster and would go on to play an important role throughout the Beatles’ later years.
Harrison’s Stratocaster can be heard on recordings from Rubber Soul, including the ringing guitar solo on “Nowhere Man,” as well as on subsequent Beatles recordings including Revolver, The White Album, Get Back, and Abbey Road.
Sometime between the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sessions and the Beatles’ June 25, 1967 global broadcast of “All You Need Is Love,” Harrison transformed the guitar into the psychedelic instrument that became known as “Rocky.”
Using Day-Glo paints and nail polish, Harrison covered the Sonic Blue Stratocaster in his own colorful, unmistakable artwork. What started as a standard Fender Stratocaster became one of the most recognizable guitars in rock history.
The Fender Rocky Stratocaster
Fender created this limited-edition Artist Series model as a tribute to Harrison’s one-of-a-kind instrument, reproducing the distinctive psychedelic artwork with the alder body hand-painted to replicate Harrison’s original brushstrokes.
The guitar features a mid-’60s “C”-shaped maple neck paired with a warm 7.25" radius slab rosewood fingerboard, providing the familiar feel of a classic mid-’60s Stratocaster. A trio of Vintera ’60s Stratocaster single-coil pickups delivers the dynamic, crystalline Fender tone associated with the golden age of the Strat.
The combination of the hand-painted Rocky artwork, vintage-inspired specifications, and limited production makes this much more than another Stratocaster. It is a faithful tribute to one of the most recognizable guitars ever associated with George Harrison and the Beatles.
